Yes – Per say Asthma is not hereditary but one can inherit the tendency to develop Asthma. Statistics have shown that you have a 6% chance of having asthma if neither parent has the condition; a 30% chance if one parent has it; and a 70% chance if both parents have it. |

People with asthma should not exercise.
No – People are rather advised to learn exercises to improve their breathing and lung capacity. At the same time exercising in dry, cold air, may trigger an episode of asthma in some people. |

No - Asthma is not at all contagious. |

Is Asthma "all in the mind”?
No - Asthma is not a psychological condition. However, emotional triggers can induce or aggravate an Asthma attack. |

Asthma does not require medical treatment.
No - Asthma is not self limiting illness it is best controlled by having an asthma management plan. It may include medications used for quick relief and also those used as controllers. |

Moving to a different location, such as a place having dry climate, can cure asthma.
No - New environment many a times temporarily improves asthma symptoms, but it will not cure asthma. A few years later in the new location, many persons become sensitized to the new environment and the asthma symptoms return.

Asthma is curable and it is not a serious ailment and nobody can die from it.
No - There is no cure for asthma, never the less the disease can be controlled in most patients with good medical care. Severe forms of Asthma when uncontrolled require hospitalization and can be fatal.

Can one "grow out of Asthma”?
No - You cannot outgrow asthma. In about 50% of children with asthma, the condition may become inactive in the teenage years. The symptoms, however, may reoccur at anytime in adulthood. |
